            Undulation is a form of propulsion in which waves of bending propagate along an elongated, slender body. This locomotor strategy is used by organisms that span orders of magnitude in size and represent diverse habitats and species. Despite this diversity, common neuromechanical phenomena have been observed across biologically disparate undulators, as a result of common mechanics. For example, neuromechanical phase lags (NPL), a phenomenon where waves of muscle contraction travel at different speeds than the corresponding body bends, have been observed in fish, lamprey, and lizards. Existing theoretical descriptions of this phenomenon implicate the role of physical body-environment interactions. However, systematic experimental variation of body-environment interactions and measurement of the corresponding phase lags have not been performed. Using the nematode we measured phase lags across a range of environmental interaction regimes, performing calcium imaging in body wall muscles in fluids of varying viscosity and on agar. A mechanical model demonstrates that the measured phase lags are controlled by the relative strength of elastic torques within the body and resistive forces within the medium. We further show that the phase lags correspond with a difference in the wave number of the muscle activity and curvature patterns. Hence, the environmental forces that create NPL also act as a filter that shapes and modulates the gait articulated by the nervous system. Beyond nematodes, the simplicity of our model suggests that tuning body elasticity may serve as a general means of controlling the degree of mechanical wave modulation in other undulators.more » « lessFree, publicly-accessible full text available April 1, 2026

            Casual recommendations for scientists to “be human” and to “bring the public alongside the scientific process” have generated plethora of such interactions on social media. This study explores different self-presentation tactics, like sharing their research successes and failures, or contextualizing their research process, on how scientists and science issues are perceived by the public. In an online between-subjects experiment (N= 1,843), participants rated scientists who shared their failures as more benevolent and open, and as having more integrity, than those who only shared their successes. These perceptions further increased support for science and information-seeking intentions. The findings highlight how scientists’ self-presentation on social media can influence important science communication outcomes.more » « less

            Self-propelling organisms locomote via generation of patterns of self-deformation. Despite the diversity of body plans, internal actuation schemes and environments in limbless vertebrates and invertebrates, such organisms often use similar traveling waves of axial body bending for movement. Delineating how self-deformation parameters lead to locomotor performance (e.g. speed, energy, turning capabilities) remains challenging. We show that a geometric framework, replacing laborious calculation with a diagrammatic scheme, is well-suited to discovery and comparison of effective patterns of wave dynamics in diverse living systems. We focus on a regime of undulatory locomotion, that of highly damped environments, which is applicable not only to small organisms in viscous fluids, but also larger animals in frictional fluids (sand) and on frictional ground. We find that the traveling wave dynamics used by mm-scale nematode worms and cm-scale desert dwelling snakes and lizards can be described by time series of weights associated with two principal modes. The approximately circular closed path trajectories of mode weights in a self-deformation space enclose near-maximal surface integral (geometric phase) for organisms spanning two decades in body length. We hypothesize that such trajectories are targets of control (which we refer to as “serpenoid templates”). Further, the geometric approach reveals how seemingly complex behaviors such as turning in worms and sidewinding snakes can be described as modulations of templates. Thus, the use of differential geometry in the locomotion of living systems generates a common description of locomotion across taxa and provides hypotheses for neuromechanical control schemes at lower levels of organization.more » « less

            Limbless locomotors, from microscopic worms to macroscopic snakes, traverse complex, heterogeneous natural environments typically using undulatory body wave propagation. Theoretical and robophysical models typically emphasize body kinematics and active neural/electronic control. However, we contend that because such approaches often neglect the role of passive, mechanically controlled processes (those involving “mechanical intelligence”), they fail to reproduce the performance of even the simplest organisms. To uncover principles of how mechanical intelligence aids limbless locomotion in heterogeneous terradynamic regimes, here we conduct a comparative study of locomotion in a model of heterogeneous terrain (lattices of rigid posts). We used a model biological system, the highly studied nematode wormCaenorhabditis elegans, and a robophysical device whose bilateral actuator morphology models that of limbless organisms across scales. The robot’s kinematics quantitatively reproduced the performance of the nematodes with purely open-loop control; mechanical intelligence simplified control of obstacle navigation and exploitation by reducing the need for active sensing and feedback. An active behavior observed inC. elegans, undulatory wave reversal upon head collisions, robustified locomotion via exploitation of the systems’ mechanical intelligence. Our study provides insights into how neurally simple limbless organisms like nematodes can leverage mechanical intelligence via appropriately tuned bilateral actuation to locomote in complex environments. These principles likely apply to neurally more sophisticated organisms and also provide a design and control paradigm for limbless robots for applications like search and rescue and planetary exploration.more » « less

            Cell identification is an important yet difficult process in data analysis of biological images. Previously, we developed an automated cell identification method called CRF_ID and demonstrated its high performance in C. elegans whole-brain images (Chaudhary et al, 2021). However, because the method was optimized for whole-brain imaging, comparable performance could not be guaranteed for application in commonly used C. elegans multi-cell images that display a subpopulation of cells. Here, we present an advance CRF_ID 2.0 that expands the generalizability of the method to multi-cell imaging beyond whole-brain imaging. To illustrate the application of the advance, we show the characterization of CRF_ID 2.0 in multi-cell imaging and cell-specific gene expression analysis in C. elegans. This work demonstrates that high accuracy automated cell annotation in multi-cell imaging can expedite cell identification and reduce its subjectivity in C. elegans and potentially other biological images of various origins.more » « less

            How do religious affiliation and beliefs shape vaccine attitudes and behaviors? This study examined the associations of attitudes and behaviors relevant to the flu, measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), and human-papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines with religious affiliations, as well as philosophical, spiritual, and moral beliefs. Respondents were 3005 adults from a probability-based, four-wave panel survey in the United States. Longitudinal structural equation modeling examined how religious affiliations and philosophical/moral beliefs shaped attitudes toward vaccines and actual vaccination. Stronger philosophical beliefs predicted more negative attitudes toward each vaccine and stronger moral beliefs more negative attitudes toward the HPV vaccine. Negative vaccine attitudes then predicted weaker intentions to encourage others to vaccinate and lower probability of receiving a vaccine. Theoretical and public health messaging implications are discussed.more » « less

            We apply topological data analysis to the behavior of C. elegans , a widely studied model organism in biology. In particular, we use topology to produce a quantitative summary of complex behavior which may be applied to high-throughput data. Our methods allow us to distinguish and classify videos from various environmental conditions and we analyze the trade-off between accuracy and interpretability. Furthermore, we present a novel technique for visualizing the outputs of our analysis in terms of the input. Specifically, we use representative cycles of persistent homology to produce synthetic videos of stereotypical behaviors.more » « less

            null (Ed.)Platinum coordination complexes have found wide applications as chemotherapeutic anticancer drugs in synchronous combination with radiation (chemoradiation) as well as precursors in focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID) for nano-scale fabrication. In both applications, low-energy electrons (LEE) play an important role with regard to the fragmentation pathways. In the former case, the high-energy radiation applied creates an abundance of reactive photo- and secondary electrons that determine the reaction paths of the respective radiation sensitizers. In the latter case, low-energy secondary electrons determine the deposition chemistry. In this contribution, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study on the role of LEE interactions in the fragmentation of the Pt(II) coordination compound cis-PtBr2(CO)2. We discuss our results in conjunction with the widely used cancer therapeutic Pt(II) coordination compound cis-Pt(NH3)2Cl2 (cisplatin) and the carbonyl analog Pt(CO)2Cl2, and we show that efficient CO loss through dissociative electron attachment dominates the reactivity of these carbonyl complexes with low-energy electrons, while halogen loss through DEA dominates the reactivity of cis-Pt(NH3)2Cl2.more » « less

            In this study, we present experimental and theoretical results on dissociative electron attachment and dissociative ionisation for the potential FEBID precursor cis -Pt(CO) 2 Cl 2 . UHV surface studies have shown that high purity platinum deposits can be obtained from cis -Pt(CO) 2 Cl 2 . The efficiency and energetics of ligand removal through these processes are discussed and experimental appearance energies are compared to calculated thermochemical thresholds. The present results demonstrate the potential effectiveness of electron-induced reactions in the deposition of this FEBID precursor, and these are discussed in conjunction with surface science studies on this precursor and the design of new FEBID precursors.more » « less

To simplify the control of the robots’ many in-ternal degrees-of-freedom, we introduce a biologically-inspiredtemplate in which two co-planar traveling waves are superposedto produce an in-plane turning motion, theomega turn. Theomega turn gait arises from modulating the wavelengths andamplitudes of the two traveling waves. We experimentally testthe omega turn on a snake robot, and show that this turninggait outperforms previous turning gaits: it results in a largerangular displacement and a smaller area swept by the bodyover a gait cycle, allowing the robot to turn in highly confinedspaces.more » « less
